The European Union of 27 produces some 17 million metric tonnes of sugar in 158 plants. Sugar beet crops cover 1.8 million hectares.
Depending on the years, France produces from 4 to7 million metric tons of sugar, mainly from sugar beet. 250 to 280 thousand metric tonnes are produced in French overseas regions from sugar cane.
In continental France, sugar beet crops represent some 380,000 hectares. Yield now regularly exceeds 11 metric tonnes of sugar per hectare, making France one of the world’s most productive regions. France has 30 sugar factories (2007 campaign) which transform beet into sugar, and two port refineries transforming raw sugar cane into white sugar, in Marseille and Nantes. France’s second leading producer, Saint Louis Sucre itself produces ¼ of the country’s quotas.
French consumption is relatively stable at around 2.2 million metric tonnes per year, mainly in the form of transformed products.
